FAQ

What rules and regulations affect Drone use?

RPAS is the official International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) term for such aircraft. They are also known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), and Drones.

The New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority has a very useful FAQ page in particular covering the rules and regulations for where you can fly.

Also check your Local Council website as some Councils also have their own regulations.

Do the drones need to be connected to WiFi to operate?

Drones that use WiFi to communicate to a Smartphone use the WiFi built into your smartphone and the drone so there is no cost or need to purchase anything else. It does not use your phone providers connection and therefore does not need phone service or use your data allowance. You do need to download an app to use this functionality. If travelling overseas we suggest you download the app while you still have a connection at home so you don't have to use overseas data roaming costs.
